The Effect of Maternal Employment on Youth Overweight and Obesity
نویسنده
چکیده
Drawing on insights from household production theory and using data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey, this paper seeks to provide the first estimates of the causal effect of maternal employment on the obesity status of older children in the Australian and international literatures. To achieve this aim, proxy variables, sibling-differences and instrumental variables are used to account for potential endogeneity in maternal labour supply. The results show that part-time or full-time work by the mother is associated with decreased excess body weight in youths, relative to not working at all. Further analysis reveals that this relationship does not operate through increased earned income. This suggests a potential weakness in the underlying theory, at least in terms of its predictions for weight outcomes in adolescents. JEL classification: J22; I10

متن کاملChanging influences on childhood obesity: a study of 2 generations of the 1958 British birth cohort.
Explanations for the trend of increasing childhood obesity have yet to be identified. The authors examined members of the 1958 British birth cohort (age 7 years, n = 8,552) and offspring (ages 4-9 years, n = 1,889) born to mothers under age 30 years to establish whether risk factors for childhood obesity have changed over time (1965-1991). The authors applied multilevel linear and logistic mode...
